I've always been a creative person. It just took me a while to find my way back.
In high school, my dad introduced me to Salvador Dalí, and I was hooked.
I mixed Dalí's surrealism with Russell Drysdale's outback landscapes and Jeffrey Smart's strange, still cityscapes, and painted every chance I got.
Visual arts at uni was the plan, but I didn't get in. Places were fiercely competitive back then, so I took the communications path instead.
Straight out of uni and onto the front page.
My first job: PR and Media Manager for the Animal Welfare League Queensland.
Every morning started the same way: reading every animal cruelty story in the news.
By lunch I'd written AWLQ's response, fired off a bunch of press releases and was on the phone to radio.
I made my tv debut in a live cross during the weather, and made the front page of the paper, more than once.
And I learned, fast, how to write words that make people stop, read and act.
From Shaun the Sheep to Shillington.
20+ years in corporate marketing, and one gutsy leap into design.
Known back then as Kim Assim, I led national campaigns and events, had an office with a harbour view, and even scored a hug from Shaun the Sheep.
But I kept circling back to the creative side. Graphic design brought together the art I'd always loved and the communications world I'd been working in.
In 2014, in my mid-30s, I walked away from my six-figure job and enrolled in an intensive at Shillington College in Brisbane. I crashed at my best friend's place, had next to no money, and did the hardest course of my life.
For the next few years, I grew my design studio while working part-time in corporate and raising two kids, until I finally stepped into my studio full-time.

Seven years of planning, one redundancy, two kids and a whole lot of open spaces.

I'm wrangling two young kids, usually at the beach, and sneaking in a little silk painting whenever I can.
